It’s strange, but a lot of us don’t know why we work. Some of us have a ready response if we are asked; “I work to pay the bills” or “I work to stay busy”. Okay, that’s a start, but why do we do what we do? There are a gazillion jobs that can help pay the bills and we can stay busy doing almost anything, so why do I do what I do? Why does my doctor do what she does? Why does the guy at Subway make sandwiches? Why does the guy at AT&T sell phones? Why do my mailman and garbage man do what they do?
It’s important to know why we work. If we don’t know why we do what we do, we will eventually hate the physical and mental efforts we are exerting. Working without a purpose is the opposite of satisfying, it is frustrating. Once work becomes too frustrating we usually quit.
Why we work depends on our individual goals. Knowing our goals and realizing that the work we do moves us closer to accomplishing our goals makes work more enjoyable. So take some time to think about it. Why do YOU work? What do YOU hope to accomplish?
Why I Work
For the past few months I have been working to develop my Miss Nutralicious alter ego. This process has included the creation of materials for the Miss Nutralicious Teachers Pay Teachers store, the organization of the various health materials I plan to share online, and the writing of numerous blogs for the Miss Nutralicious website. During this entire creative process, one common theme has been running through my head; WHY am I doing this work?
These are the reasons I do what I do:
I love how I feel when I am healthy, and I want you to be able to experience the same feelings.
I love to create.
I love to write.
In real life I am anti-social, but the Miss Nutralicious alter ego is a great way for me to share ideas that I think are unique and fun.
I am educated and knowledgeable on a variety of health topics.
I personally know what it takes to get healthy and I like to share the methods that I have found help maintain healthiness.
I like feedback.
I love to keep records of my health escapades.
I love to work WHERE and WHEN I want. Especially wearing sweatpants.
I love organization.
I love to chronicle the things that have allowed me to enjoy life.
The work I am doing now helps me continue to enjoy life.
I love knowing that the work that I am doing makes me happy. For the first time ever, I feel like my work has a purpose and I am doing what I am supposed to be doing. I know what my goals are, I am working to achieve my goals, and I am enjoying the work that I need to do to accomplish my goals. My hope is that you can do the same. Why do you work? If you don't enjoy your job, what do you plan to do to make your situation more positive? If you do enjoy your job, what is it about your work that you enjoy? Please comment!
